The story centers on Seishu Handa, a calligrapher who moves in remote Goto Islands off the west coast of Kyushu, and its interactions with the locals. A manga spin-off, entitled Handa-kun, began serialization in the Monthly Shonen Gangan of Square Enix October 2013.
Seishu Handa is a calligrapher to look good, but also pretty arrogant, that he is shocked when a well-known art critic calls his works "rigid and insipid." Not holding affront pummels the old master, thus arousing the indignation of the entire artistic community. Seishu, shunned by all and considered a fool ungrateful, is then forced by his father to relocate on a remote island, where a lifestyle that pervades the very hand that is not easy to get used to an inhabitant of the city to the bone like him. There, the calligrapher meets the lively villagers, including farmers who use tractors as cars, undesirable neighbors who never use the front door and a girl pestiferous using his home as his base of games.

Innocence Lyrics
You held out your small hand
Smiling like 'you do' (to you)
It was so natural
It may have no meaning
But it is something
I can not do
You touch my hand without thinking 'that' (back)
It was nice for me
All the time we believed
That the world's in our hand
We were wrong
Maybe it wasn't
Cause you're holding my hand now
Every moment
Everywhere
I can feel
I can believe
With my holding 'of your hand' (your own hand)
Your own hand...
