Sailor Moon redefined the magical-girl genre, as preceding magical girls did not use their powers to fight evil, but this has come to be one of the standard models of the genre.
The heroine of Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino, an common dizzy middle-school girl- or so she thinks- discovers a talking cat named Luna, who uncovers Usagi's identity as "Sailor Moon," a special soldier with the fortune of saving the planet Earth, and later the entire galaxy. Usagi, who is the rebirth of the Moon Princess, must now protect Earth from a series of evil doers, beginning with the Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and shattered the kingdom of the moon.
